Tubal is extremely proud of our involvement in the WY Pre-employment program which kicked off in April in Roebourne, Western Australia. Coordinated through Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation Ltd (NYFL), and funded by the Northwest Shelf Venture, the Warragamugardi Yirdiyabura (WY) Pre Employment Program aims to prepare long term unemployed and at risk members of the local community for full time work, traineeships and apprenticeships. The course will be run over 6 months, during which all attendees will gain various skill-sets, licenses, training and certifications that will both enhance their employability and expose them to many new, varied and exciting career opportunities.
The first round saw 12 participants have their current skills and career ambitions assessed as they took part in various activities and listened to yarns from speakers describing the various careers and jobs available to them in the Pilbara. The majority of these participants have not held a formal job before, and all have a clear desire to succeed through this program.
During this first round, participants were also introduced to what life would be like working in the hospitality industry when they had the opportunity to were given the opportunity to work the bar at the new look Whim Creek Hotel last weekend. Training in responsible service of alcohol and customer service was undertaken over a two day period on and off the job, before the group were let loose behind the bar for the Pubs’ Grand Opening.
Participants will soon gain skills and certifications in Senior First Aid, Food Safety, Work Health & Safety and workplace literacy, numeracy and computer skills. Tubal and NYFL hope to have all 12 participants placed in full time work or traineeship/apprenticeship arrangements by the end of 2015.
